Storm Desmond has caused widespread flooding in the north of England and once again called into question the Government’s commitment to flood defences and the ongoing insurance of flood affected properties.

The latest storms have seen the Government criticised for delaying some flood defence schemes and where improvements have been made, some have been inadequate. Carlisle in particular suffered despite a multi-million pound investment in defences.

The new Flood Re insurance scheme, to cover properties in flood areas is due to be introduced in April 2016, but it will only provide cover for domestic properties and excludes small business. The Government’s statement that they have seen little evidence that affordable flood cover will not be available for commercial property in flood areas is almost as ridiculous as the latest American import, naming storms.
